Prayer to Saint Anthony
At 20 years of age, after the death of his parents and the inheritance of their vast wealth, Anthony came upon a passage in scripture imploring that in order for one to become perfect he must relinquish all of his wealth to the poor. In the year 285 Anthony seeking the strictest seclusion retired to a fort on Mt. Pispir where he remained for twenty years, he had no contact with any other human, his food was thrown to him over a wall of the fort. upon his emergence he founded the first Christian monastery. During his life Saint Anthony was challenged with constant bouts of temptation by evil and struggles with the devil. He disciplined himself with prayer, penance and fasting. People of all backgrounds and circumstance throughout Egypt sought Anthony's advice. Those who pray to Saint Anthony petition for miracles.
